HYDRO-NUMERIC DESIGN OF SWATH SHIPS
A new computational method for the design of small-waterplane-area twin-hull ships (SWATH's) is presented. The main objective has been an integrated computer system that will enable the designer to include advanced hydrodynamic performance predictions in the early stage of the design process. This paper presents the first phase of a planned large-scale SWATH Hydro-Numeric Design System. The system consists of four main modules. The first generates mathematically faired SWATH hull forms, performs hydrostatic computations and generates geometry descriptions needed for the hydrodynamic computations. The second computes the total calm-water resistance and in the third module the wave resistance is minimized by contouring the lower hulls. In the last module of the system, the turbulent boundary layer and the wake into the propeller are predicted. Inclusion of seakeeping predictions and determination of optimum control surface dimensions are under consideration.
