INNOVATIVE NAVAL DESIGNS FOR NORTH ATLANTIC OPERATIONS
The small-waterplane-area twin-hull (SWATH) concept has been under development for over 15 years. The primary attribute of this concept is superior seakeeping in rough seas. This paper summarizes the designs of a SWATH ship and two monohulls designed to carry the same payload, and seakeeping comparisons for the three designs. The frigate mission was selected as a basis for this study. The northern North Atlantic region was selected since it encompasses many areas of maritime interest as well as being one of the most severe operational environments.
