A REALISTIC APPROACH TO SEMISUBMERSIBLE STABILITY

This paper describes the rationale behind the development of semisubmersible stability criteria that reflect the state of the art while maintaining the simplicity of existing criteria. A critical review of existing approaches is followed by a consideration of inconsistencies in the concepts underlying hydrostatic stability. A computational procedure that overcomes these inconsistencies while incorporating any excitation/restoration effects in a manner consistent with physical considerations is then presented. Applications for intact and damage cases are considered, incorporating wind and wave effects. The results highlight the need for a clearly defined strategy in approaching the stability problem and emphasize the importance of dynamic effects. Such a strategy is presented. Stability criteria that, it is argued, represent the natural development of existing criteria, are proposed.
