SOME CONSIDERATIONS IN THE DESIGN AND OPERATION OF MULTI-LEVEL INTERCHANGES

This paper outlines the development of multi-level interchanges in this country and the standards to which they have been designed. The layout and operation of some of the major interchanges are briefly reviewed. While these are shown to be operating satisfactorily it is suggested that A study of traffic behaviour on them is now possible and could lead to improvement in design in certain aspects particularly in the merging of loops and slip roads with the through routes. An indication is given of the relationship between loop design speeds and land occupied by the interchange which emphasises the significance of the choice of design speeds. /Author/TRRL/
