EXPERIENCE IN THE REPAIRING OF CARRIAGEWAYS ON FEDERAL GERMAN MOTORWAYS

In reply to the question as to which is the most economical method - concrete or asphalt - the author concludes that asphalt construction is more economical from the point of view of both production and repair. Questions which need to be clarified before and during execution are dealt with in detail. A preliminary examination of subsoil conditions must be made, as the results are vital to the decision whether construction with or without removal of subgrade is required. The author reports in particular on repairs in the North German area and Bavaria and discusses the pros and cons of a more porous binder in relation to stability. The development of modern finishers with adequate compaction will encourage the trend towards greater thicknesses and fewer layers and dispensing with a basecourse in the interests of rationalisation. Guss asphalt was used for the most part in repairing the motorways. Guss asphalt in the traffic lanes and asphaltic concrete in the hard shoulders does not appear technically optimal. It does save on costs however. Recently guss asphalt with higher chippings content without (1) later application of chippings and grooving has been used, spread only with prebituminized crushed sand 0.6 - 2 mm. The advantages of guss asphalt outweigh the higher costs of production. Work in deep incorporation is the same as in high incorporation but requires in addition building up and removal of the demolished cement concrete slabs and the removal of unserviceable soil. The repair of asphalt carriageways is quicker and less expensive after prior preshaping with a new surface layer of asphalt concrete or guss asphalt 3-4 cm thick; the repair of ruts either by the use of mastic carpets or finishing with guss asphalt 3-4 cm thick. The Rhineland authorities made a large-scale trial on the Cologne-Lever-Kuesen Motorway with various methods of repairing the ruts. For large surface changes of asphalt top layers where rigid borders, buildings, etc. Do not allow high incorporation, the or without heating is possible. /TRRL/
