SUGGESTED SPECIFICATIONS FOR BITUMEN ON THE BASIS OF ACCURATE RHEOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The mechanical properties of bitumen depend on its consistency, resistance to shearing and sensitivity to temperature. The conventional systems of classification by means of penetration at 25 degrees C or viscosity at 60 degrees C specify the minimum requirements for bitumen to behave satisfactorily in the road. In special cases, insufficient experience has been gained in the selection of the correct type of bitumen, with the result that present methods of specifying bitumen characteristics such as penetration or ductility are less helpful to the road engineer. To overcome these limitations, examples of a system are given in which the properties of bitumen are expressed in terms of rheological data. This method allows the mechanical behaviour of bitumen above the range of temperature and loading time expected in practice to be determined on the basis of measurements of apparent viscosity at 25 degrees C and kinematic viscosity at 60 degrees C. It was demonstrated that bitumens of the same penetration and viscosity category can show different behaviour in the road because of their different resistance to shearing or temperature. An attempt to reduce these differences resulted in suggested modifications to the AASHO specifications and the introduction of two new high-viscosity types of bitumen /TRRL/
