The author compares various transport modes: underground railways, buses, tramways, trolleybuses and cars. An evaluation is presented of operational and economic criteria for solving problems of capacity, congestion, speed, comfort, aesthetics and hygiene. Economic criteria are based on costs born by the companies, users and the community. Organizational transport criteria are outlined, and it is concluded that, except for comfort, public transport offers marked advantages over private transport. The covering abstract of the conference is IRRD abstract no.100998. /TRRL/
