REAL-TIME COMPUTER SYSTEM CONTROLS NAPLES TOLLWAY

This article describes a real time surveillance and control system for an urban motorway tangential to Naples. Detectors feed information on traffic flows to a pair of central computers via outstations. The results of computations are commands to devices located along the tollway (traffic lights and message signs). A number of functions of the system are outlined: speed surveillance, automatic incident detection, ramp metering, tunnel control and exit information. The system is also used for the collection of data on traffic behaviour. /TRRL/
