The extensive urbanisation taking place in developing countries has created a demand for transportation studies in the larger urban areas. Documentation on experience and data from such studies have hitherto been very limited. This paper discusses the findings and various aspects and problems associated with transportation studies carried out in three urban areas in east Africa, including information on various characteristics such as travel, modal choice and traffic operation, as well as special problems encountered and considerations made in the planning process and in the design of traffic improvements. /Author/TRRL/
