It is suggested that the use of cyclic flow profiles is likely to be beneficial to both the theory and practice of urban traffic control. If a number of CFPs are used together they have the merit of providing information on average flow rate, and platoon speed and dispersion in a compact, easily understood picture. CFPs can be measured quite easily by manual means, but they could be particularly valuable to traffic engineers working on computer-controlled traffic systems. /Author/TRRL/
