TRIALS FOR THE CLASSIFICATION OF ROAD SURFACES

Classification of road surfaces in terms of their reflection characteristics is used to pre-determine their luminance. Surfaces may be subjectively classified as light or dark, shiny or dull. However, a more precise objective classification is required, based on measurement of the characteristic physical parameters of the surface. This article reviews and explains the various classifications, and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of each. /TRRL/
