DURABLE CONCRETE. COMPILATION 24. THE DURABILITY OF EXPOSED AGGREGATE CONCRETE

It is pointed out that exposed aggregate concrete offers designers unlimited freedom of choice of texture, form, pattern, shape and color, and gives better appearance and lower maintenance. The article examines the variables that create problems at the face of smooth concrete when attempting an architectural finish, and discusses the physical characteristics that make exposed aggregate concrete so much better equipped to weather attractively. Forming and mix design are discussed, as well as placement, curing, chemicals, and weathering. The less exposed cement matrix, hardened cement surface, and the ability to shed rain are discussed, together with the ability to diffuse rain. Comments are made on color permanency, and freeze-thaw durability.
