RESTRICTED DRAUGHT TANKER SHOULD PROVIDE FOOD FOR THOUGHT

'A tanker in the class of 400,000--500,000 tons dw and restricted in draught, is acceptable from a viewpoint of exploitation (cost of transport per ton cargo on certain routes), construction and of shiphandling and manoeuvring'. This is the general conclusion reached in a multi-disciplinary study made in the Netherlands into the technical, nautical and economic features of large tankers suitable for operation on the North Sea and through the English Channel in general, and more specifically for operation to and in Europoort. This study was carried out in close co-operation between representatives of the Municipality of Rotterdam (Municipal Port Management), Verolme United Shipyards (VUS) and the Netherlands Ship Model Basin (NSMB). In view of its interests in the handling and manoeuvring characteristics of large tankers, the Netherlands Ministry of Transport, Hydraulics and Public works, also participated in this study, its main reason being the problems concerning the design of harbour entrances, approaches and North Sea routes.
