PRACTICAL AND MEDICAL ASPECTS OF THE USE OF CAR SEAT BELTS

An analysis is made of the influence of use and non use of seat belts on type and severity of injuries to drivers and of the influence of seat belt type on type and severity of injuries to drivers. It can be stated that from the SWOV accident investigation practice it follows that users of lap belts and users of 3-point belts enjoy a comparable and considerable reduction of injury severity in accidents. The diagonal belt users, even though they are better protected than non users, have less protection than the users of both other types of seat belts. As a result of research on certain important injury patterns alterations to automobiles with regard to crashworthiness can be proposed. Practical effects of recent alterations, such as energy absorbing structures, special windscreens, energy absorbing steering columns and improvements in the conception of seat belts, can be studied.
