SOIL-CEMENT BASES IN THE R.P.5 SAN LUIS DEL PALMAR-CAA

BASES DE SUELO-CEMENTO EN LA R.P.5, TRAMO: SAN LUIS DEL PALMAR-CAA CATI DE LA PROVINCIA DE CORRIENTES

This article describes the technical characteristics of the soil-cement bases of provincial route no. 5 in the province of corrientes, Cordoba (Argentina). Details are given of certain constructional aspects, variations in design, quality and nature of the soil used, percentages of cement used, environmental difficulties, etc. The experience gained will be used in the construction of route no. 6. A 100 metre experimental section was first built. The soil-cement base had the following characteristics: low plasticity passes through no. 10 mesh sieve = 100%; passes through no. 40 = 92 to 96%; passes through no. 200 = 18 to 22 %; modified Proctor density = 2.02 kgs./dm3; moisture content 9.5%. Following durability tests, it was decided to use cement to the extent of 8% of the volume. The experimental section helped engineers to determine the final design of the soil cement bases and the thickness of loose earth; this was fixed at 15 cm., in order to take the sub-grade quality into account. The first sections (built in January, 1972), after being surfaced with two layers of asphaltic mortar, each 5 cm. Thick, have adequately carried heavy traffic to the construction sites for the rest of the highway. /TRRL/
