Details are given of tests carried out on cores of rock-fill Cretaceous material (marls, clay-limestone and argilites) the following variables were modified: thickness of ledge, number of courses, type of compactor, velocity of compactation vibration frequency, percentage of water added, etc.; measurements were taken of the control parameters of compaction, real density, percentage of compaction, void ratio and granulometry. The quality control of the rock-fills included the control of settlement during compaction by means of tests with v.s.s. Load plates of 60 cm. Diameter; and visual inspection of open-trenches in different zones. Based on the results obtained recommendations of a general nature are given regarding the construction of rock-fills with minimum compressibility and maximum possible strength. These recommendations refer to the excavation of the material (so as to obtain suitable granulometry), transport conditions, pouring and extension (for this purpose tip-up lorries, loading-shovels and bulldozers are recommended), optimum moisture cement (at which fines reach their plastic limit), the optimum moment for irrigation (between the extension and the compaction); thickness of ledges (0.7 to 1.00 meter with a maximum of less than 70% of this thickness) compaction (with vibratory roller of a minimum static weight of 8 tons) frequency between 1,500 and 1,800 r.p.m. Speed of 10 to 25 meters per minute) number of courses (between 7 and 10); spillway slopes control of settlement and of compaction; completion of the rock-fills and any necessary extra width. A table showing the maximum settlement foreseen for the rock-fill is included. /TRRL/
