SIGNATURE ANALYSIS OF TURBOMACHINERY

During operation, turbomachinery generates characteristic static and dynamic signals which are indicative of its mechanical integrity. Sensors placed on stationary and rotating parts could measure the parameters required to determine when a machine is operating normally, marginally, or defectively. This article examines a technique which may eventually be used to control machinery operation based upon instantaneous spectra analysis of the signals obtained from critically located sensors. An insight is given into how this technique should be applied to enable turbomachinery operators to avoid unscheduled downtime.
