DATA EXCHANGE FORMATS FOR CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT INFORMATION

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is in its infancy in the UK construction industry. Its introduction offers potential benefits in reduced paper handling, saving in clerical and mailing costs, greater accuracy and speed of information exchange. To realise these benefits industry specific messages need to be developed for currently occurring paper based transactions. This process is currently underdeveloped and poorly documented for the construction industry. This paper reports ongoing research which has examined and documented the information flows occurring within the construction industry and has identified those flows which would benefit the industry if developed into EDI messages. In addition the available data exchange standards have been examined and the message development process analysed and documented. Currently work is underway on the first phase of the message development process, the data analysis, for a construction specifications message. Field trials are also being conducted with collaborating companies with the previously developed Bill of Quantities messages and their usefulness and impact is being assessed. This work has been undertaken in collaboration with construction companies and in particular EDICON the construction industry EDI organisation. (A) For the covering abstract see IRRD 861794.
