QUIET AIR PROPULSION FOR HIGH SPEED GROUND TRANSPORTATION

A quiet air propulsion system for high speed ground transportation has been proposed as an alternative to the many systems currently being investigated. This variable pitch, subsonic tipspeed, high bypass ratio fan - the Q Fan - combines the high trust feature with the advantage of low noise. This article describes the propulsion system in detail, including basic concepts, and the noise aero-acoustic theory, with illustrative figures. Areas requiring further research are mentioned, as well as specific studies that will reveal the feasibility of utilizing the Q-Fan as a quiet propulsor for advanced ground transportation vehicles (AGTV's).
