A METHOD OF CALIBRATING THE IMPACT TESTING EQUIPMENT FOR AGGREGATE TESTING

Despite standardized methods of construction, marked variations became apparent in a comparison of the results obtained with various impact testing equipment used to check certain quality features of aggregates used in roads. An attempt was made, by means of systematic measurements of vibrations of the apparatus and the impacting force, to explain the reasons for these variations. The results of the comparative measurements of force showed that in standard din 52109 too little value is placed on the design of the dropping weight and the stamp. The tests indicated that it would be possible to use the measurement of impact force to calibrate the impact testing equipment. A calibration method of this kind is described. It enables slight constructional differences in the equipment to be compensated mathematically. /TRRL/
