MEASUREMENT OF THE DENSITY OF THE TOP INCH OF ASPHALT PAVING BY GAMMA RADIATION

An apparatus was developed for the non-destructive measurement of the density of the 2.5 cm-thick upper layer of a flexible pavement. The apparatus uses the principle of gamma ray backscattering but is different from normally used equipment in that the depth of measurement does not exceed 2.5 cm; this result was obtained by using a low-energy source (am 241) situated at a distance of 5.5 cm from the detector, the latter being a na(ti) detector. A comparison was made with the technique of core boring, scraping and weighing, and the mean quadratic deviation observed between the two methods was 0.02 gr/cm cubed, e.g. Less than 1%. /TRRL/
