STATISTICAL ANALYSES OF THE STRENGTH AND DEFORMATION OF THE SUBSOIL
STATISTISCHE FESTIGKEITS-UND VERFORMUNGSANALYSEN DES UNTERG RUNDES
The evaluation of about 3000 individual tests to determine the strength and deformation properties of viennese green marl (tegel) showed that site investigation based on statistics only provides accurate values in exceptional cases. Despite uniform history of origin of viennese green marl, the large fluctuations in the soil physics values (such as in cohesion and compressive strength and differences in the compression modulus) cast doubt on the value of statistical site investigations for engineering projects. Statistics are useful for general, large-area soil evaluation and soil description, but cannot replace detailed soil surveys and laboratory tests needed for each individual case. /TRRL/
