OPTIMAL SPARE PART KITS

In order to keep a shipboard system operating at peak efficiency a number of spare parts must be carried; yet, this can cause a budgetary problem unless it is intended to spend a large amount of money on spare parts. A series optimization system is described and its faults enumerated. A dynamic programming optimization system is then described. The objective is to obtain the largest reliability factor by distributing the total available amount among the various parts required for the system. The total allocation pattern starts from a system consisting of one part, maximizing the reliability, then repeating the process for additional parts. As this can involve a large number of arithmetical operations for a large system, a computer program has been drawn up which reduces necessary computer time by a factor of at least 100. Tables are given for examples of the system and its relation to cost-reliability curves.
