MASONRY ARCH BRIDGES

The Transport Research Laboratory has been concerned with various aspects of the behaviour of masonry arch bridges for about ten years. These have included the development of analytical methods to describe their behaviour under load, load tests to failure on a number of full scale bridges to calibrate analytical methods, and assessment of condition and of repair and strengthening methods. A number of individuals and organisations have collaborated in writing this Review; their names are: Max Blackler, Ron Bridle, Simon Broomhead, Ban Seng Choo, Bill Harvey, Arnold Hendry, Tim Hughes, Clive Lemmon, Clive Melbourne, and David Ponniah. The book provides a guide to the history and construction of masonry arch bridges, to methods of structural analysis and assessment and to load tests which have been done to explore their structural behaviour. It discusses provision of data for assessment and it considers common problems and repair and strengthening methods. It also provides a substantial bibliography of references on masonry arches.
