Since July 1971 an offshore ore terminal employing the Marconaflo method of slurry handling has been operating. This particular operation, located off the New Zealand coast, is concerned with the mining of ironsand and has proven to be a great success. What is more important is that it demonstrates the feasibility of the off shore ore port. There is no limitation as far as the off shore distance of operation is concerned. The slurry is pumped from the one man operated dredge to a treatment plant ashore. The ore is separated from the slurry and loaded on board a vessel for shipment. The system has great flexibility when used in conjunction with the combination oil, ore, and slurry carriers.
