SHEAR STRESS AND PORE PRESSURE IN TRIAXIAL TESTING

In this discussion of shear stress and pore pressure Narain and Singh agree with Busht that lubricated enlarged platens can be used to improve the uniformity of stress and the deformation in soil specimens in triaxial testing. Experiments conducted on a highly plastic clay are detailed, as are Casagrande's observations on the collapse of structure of a soil specimen in the center, and the resultant changes in pore pressure and principal stresses. The writers agree with the author that pore pressure behavior in segmental sections should follow the pattern of the midheight measurements in a rapid conventional test. The author's conclusion that shear-strength parameters are not modified in free-end tests is disputed by the writers. Strength versus water content in frictionless and ordinary caps is discussed and test data reported.
