SLURRY FLOW MEASUREMENTS USING MAGNETIC FLOWMETERS
Magnetic flowmeters for use in dredging operations have been improved so that they give more accurate readings of flow within a pipeline. The author describes the principle of operation of a magnetic flowmeter, and shows how the use of magnetic coils causes each particle passing through the pipeline to give an accurate reading of its velocity even under non-symmetrical flow channeling conditions. The accuracy of this flowmeter is increased by a factor of 10 due to the fact that the majority of the signal is produced within a length equal to approximately one diameter of the pipe. Flowmeters with these coils are also considerably shorter than older models. The author then describes the advantages of magnetic flowmeters over other measuring devices. Those using a differential pressure type measurement can only function with liquids of constant density while magnetic flowmeters can measure the flow of mixtures made up of gases, liquids, and solids. Studies were conducted with different obstructions in a pipe such as non-conductive deposits, a solid non-conducting rod, and air. It was shown that the magnetic flowmeter measures the total dredged material correctly provided there is no large difference in the velocities between water, sand, and stones which is generally the case in actual dredging operations.
