For the motorist, the bumper sticker is fast becoming a popular and fashionable means of self-expression. Studies reveal that a bumper sticker, placed on the car of a twice-daily commuter on the Los Angeles freeway system, will be seen by four to five thousand people a day. Reading bumper stickers has become a national pastime. Several screen printing operations have devoted their entire production specialty to them. For dated messages which have maybe a total life expectancy of two months, paper substrates are very acceptable when matched with an adhesive which will come off when the bumper sticker does. For longer periods of exposure synthetic substrate bumper stickers - polyvinyl chloride, acrylic and mylar (polyester) - are infinitely tougher materials which also hold onto their adhesive much better than paper stocks.
