ENERGY IN PERSPECTIVE: DON'T TACKLE VAST PROBLEMS WITH HALF VAST MEASURES

This paper looks at the energy crisis from an engineer's point of view. The cutoff in the Arab oil supply is seen not as a detrimental factor causing an energy crisis, but as a step toward preventing a major disaster in about five years from now by forcing people to begin thinking about the energy problem now and making plans to avert that disaster toward which the economy was inevitably heading. The energy crisis is defined as a crisis in the ability to control a complex economy while maintaining a free economy. In support of this definition, discussions are presented on long-term energy demand projections, the reduction of future demand for imports, and the increase in domestic production now.
