Climatic conditions in arid areas are such that surface soils are alternately severely desiccated and rewetted. Laboratory simulation of these conditions shows that the effects of severe desiccation on the volume change and shear strength of clays are equivalent to those produced by heavy over-consolidation. The engineering properties of desiccated clays are shown to be controlled by the principle of effective stress and the components of effective stress are evaluated for two partly saturated clays. /ASCE/
