URBAN AIR QUALITY IN THE UK. FIRST REPORT OF THE QUALITY OF URBAN AIR REVIEW GROUP

This report presents data on the present state of urban air quality in the United Kingdom. Statistics are provided for the following pollutants: a) benzene, 1,3 butadiene and other volatile organic compounds; b) airborne fine dust; c) carbon monoxide; d) sulphur dioxide; e) nitrogen dioxide; f) ozone; and g) metals. The results of real time monitoring indicates that motor traffic plays an increasing role in urban air pollution. The concentrations of some pollutants, notably nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide, may exceed World Health Organization 1-hour guidelines in some urban areas. Certain weather conditions can lead to extreme concentrations of pollution generated by road traffic and other low source levels. Recommendations are made for improved air pollution monitoring, and for further research.
