TRACK SUPERSTRUCTURE - CONDITION SINE QUA NON

DER OBERBAU - CONDITIO SINE QUA NON]

Superstructure is subjected to static and dynamic stresses. In the interests of safety and productivity, wear in equipment must be foreseen in time. To avoid disturbing traffic as far as possible because of work on superstructures, the use of S 60 type rails has been introduced. First class track on main and secondary lines with traffic volumes of more than 25,000 tonnes/day should be composed of S 60 type rails. By 1985, the DB plans to lay 16,000 km of track and fit 15,000 points with heavy rails (S 60 and S 54). Lastly, the author deals with the problem of collaboration with rail manufacturing works and the organization of the superstructure section.
