INTEGRATED FIRE DETECTION SYSTEM PROTECTS CRITICAL MACHINERY SPACES

An integrated fire detection and extinguishing system for protecting machinery compartments on board ships is described. The system provides prompt detection of any fire or overheat condition which may develop in any of the protected spaces through the use of seperate continous-length thermal detectors. Signalling of a fire is given on the control module located in the control room, and an alarm light and an audible horn are activated, and the light identifies in which room the fire exists. An operator must then discharge the extinguishing agent into the affected space. A typical system installation is described, with each of the various components explained.
