As an alternative to C02 fire extinguishing systems, Halon 1301 has been developed and is now used on shipboard installations. Unlike C02, Halon 1301 does not depend on cooling or dilution to extinguish a flame but enters into flame reaction to directly inhibit that reaction. This article discusses how Halon 1301 works in fire extinguishing, and it also describes the actuation methods of this shipboard system, and these include both pneumatic and manual actuation. The manner in which the quantity of extinguishant needed in calculated is also explained.
