HISTORY OF RETAINING WALL DESIGN
This paper reviews the history of retaining wall design, beginning with the insertion of horizontal mats in Newgrange Cairn. The retaining walls used in the Pyramids, in the cairn of Gavrinis, and various tombs and temples are also illustrated and discussed. Excerpts are taken from Vitruvius' De Re Architecutra in which the use of internal buttresses is commented on at length. Details are also provided of the fortification of Ypres in 1699. The theories of Coulomb, Rankine, Sokolowski, Boussinesq are also touched upon. For the covering abstract see IRRD 860485.
