WAVE INDUCED DYNAMIC LOADINGS IN LIFT LINES FOR OCEAN EMPLACEMENT AND RETRIEVAL

Houston, Tex, Preprints v 1 paper 1384 p 553-64; Force variations in lifting ropes, induced by ocean waves, were measured, analyzed, and correlated with the vertical acceleration of the lift point. The dynamic force response is presented in a spectral form. A cubical a spherical, and a cylindrical concrete object were lowered, respectively, at one end of a rope controlled by a winch. A synthetic rope and a steel wire rope were tested. The ultimate goal of the tests was to determine the design criteria for the lift system. The acceleration and the line force fluctuation were recorded by a magnetic recorder. Probability of a large dynamic line force that may occur in a time period can be calculated.
