PREDICTING EARTHQUAKE-CAUSED PERMANENT DEFORMATIONS OF EARTH STRUCTURES
This paper deals with the permanent deformations that can occur when earth structures are shaken by an earthquake. A classification of methods for calculating permanent displacements is introduced, and used as a framework for discussing the many different approaches that have been developed. Particular emphasis is placed upon validation of various methods using model tests and field observations. Two types of classification are discussed. The first is by the phenomenon causing the permanent deformation. This includes: a) yielding but no loss of strength; b) loss of strength; and c) both yielding and loss of strength. The second classification is by coupling of dynamic response and permanent straining. The following analyses methods are discussed in more detail: 1) Sliding block analyses, and their application to finite slopes; 2) Finite element and differential analyses; and 3) methods considering only loss of strength.
