SOME ASPECTS OF THE USE OF SKIP LOAD TESTS TO DETERMINE THE SETTLEMENT BEHAVIOUR OF FILLS
The use of skip load tests to determine the settlement characteristics of fills has increased in the UK since publication of a standard specification of skip load tests in BS 1377 : Part 9 : 1990. Some suggested modifications to this procedure are discussed. Results of skip tests at two sites are presented and discussed. The first site was a former clay pit which had been backfilled with domestic waste and capped with approximately 3m of clay. The second site was an area which had been reclaimed from previously inter-tidal mud flats. The results indicate that in addition to measuring immediate and long term creep settlement, the differential settlement and the potential of the ground for collapse settlement can also be assessed. It is recommended that the ground around all skip load tests is inundated to investigate the potential of the fill for collapse settlement. For the covering abstract see IRRD 859718.
