URBAN TRANSPORT FOR A VITAL AND SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
This paper focuses attention on the way urban transport needs to be planned to achieve a vital and sustainable future. It looks at how our cities can be developed in a more ecologically sustainable way whilst retaining features which contribute positively to city living. Objectives have been suggested that are in keeping with this vision. Transport and land use policies need to be developed together, to improve accessibility rather than simply mobility. It is suggested that urban planners should seek an urban form that is biased towards more sustainable modes, especially walking and cycling. Mixed land use, leading to shorter trips may well be the key. Cities have developed over many years and their transport and social systems are complex. Congestion and pollution are becoming more severe. These problems cannot be solved by simply increasing transport supply; demand management is both desirable and necessary. Because of the complexities of city structure, an integrated systems approach to travel demand management provides the best opportunity to develop equitable, efficient and sustainable urban transport systems.
