BRIDGE ASSESSMENT: THE NEED FOR CODIFIED RULES

Although Standards are readily available for the design of steel bridges, there is a sparsity of codified requirements that facilitate the assessment of existing bridges which do not comply with limitations implicit in design rules. The paper describes the development of draft assessment provisions to be used with BS 5400, Part 3, the United Kingdom Code of Practice for Steel Bridges. Various aspects are covered where benefits may be derived for assessment above those available for use in design. The paper gives specific examples where application of a more fundamental approach enables variable structural configurations to be dealt with that are not encompasssed within a design code for new structures. The paper also discusses some general problems of dealing with assessment, as opposed to design, and the need to have a general set of assessment provisions which can be allied to a design document.
