REFLECTOMETRIC AND DYNAMIC MEASUREMENTS ON THE STAYS OF THE POLCEVERA VIADUCT IN GENOA (ITALY)

This paper describes two non destructive tests carried out on the prestressed concrete stays of the Polcevera viaduct in Genoa. The tests were performed as a quality control measure and to assess the tensile stress currently acting on the stay. The state of the prestressing cables were determined using the RIMT (Reflectometric Impulse Measurement Technology) method. The tension in the stay was determined using the "dynamic method". Brief details are provided of the principles of the methods, the measurements carried out, and the main defects or stresses encountered. The results are compared with those obtained from a specially developed mathematical model of the system. This model simulated the dynamic behaviour of the stay subjected to the release test, and were conducted using the finite element non linear computer code ADINA. The model was subjected to a series of parametric dynamic tests, varying the traction force acting on the stay and appropriately reducing the axial and flexural stiffness of several strands so as to simulate the damage existing in certain zones of the stay.
