STUDIES ON WIRE DRAWING THROUGH TURKS HEAD ROLLS

Analysis and experiment to clarify the three-dimensional drawing mechanism through turks head rolls, as well as the development of new techniques for the drawing of metals are reported. The validity of the analytical method is demonstrated and the basic technology applicable to the actual drawing is described. The analytical study on the drawing of square wires from square wires with four rolls is detailed. Orown's rolling theory is extended and basic equations governing the drawing process are established. The drawing of square wires from round wires is also described. Introducing mean stresses and strains, a method of calculating drawing stress and normal roll pressure is established. An analytical method of drawing flat wires from round wires is outlined. The relation between drawing conditions and drawing stress or roll force have been systematically investigated in the case of two or four rolls. The drawing stress under various drawing conditions, such as restriction to the rolls and further back pull or back push, are shown in comparison with those under free rolls. These tendencies are generally observed in the drawing of square wires from square or round wires and in the drawing of flat wires from round wires. From investigations of the relations between drawing stress and the reduction of cross-section of square wires from square or round wires and reduction of cross-section of flat wires from round wires, it has been concluded that the drawing stress becomes smaller in the case of compression from four sides, like the drawing of square wires from square wires. The deforming mechanism of lateral spread in the drawing of flat wires round wires has been clarified.
