CALCULATION OF VERTICAL MOISTURE FLOW IN A SOIL BODY DURING EVAPORATION, INFILTRATION AND REDISTRIBUTION

Water movement in soil is governed by the law of continuity and the law of resistance. Combination of these two principles gives a differential equation which can describe the movement of moisture in soils. With the aid of theoretical considerations it is possible to divide the soil profile into different zones, for each of which the boundary conditions can be defined. For each such zone one can calculate the distribution of moisture content and water potential using the law of continuity and the law of resistance in accordance with the boundary conditions. The relationship between potential and moisture content is for this purpose considered to be step-wise. The most important advantage of this procedure is that the division of the soil profile into zones is automatically carried out in accordance with the changing moisture profile. /TRRL/
