DESIGN, FUNCTION, AND APPLICATION OF IONIZING GAPS FOR IGNITION SYSTEMS

Misfiring of engines with fouling spark plugs is caused by a loss of ignition energy in the deposits of the spark plugs. This loss of energy can be avoided and a steep ascent of voltage achieved by connecting an ionizing gap with suitable breakdown voltage in a series close to each of the spark plugs. Vehicle application requires ionizing gaps with high stability of breakdown voltage over life time. Design and performance of the new BOSCH Ionizing Gap are explained. /GMRL/
