DEVELOPMENT OF ENGINEERING CRITERIA FOR SHREDDED WASTE TIRES IN HIGHWAY APPLICATIONS. FINAL REPORT

The primary objective of the research described in this report is to develop design procedures for reusing shredded waste tires as a lightweight fill material in highway construction because it would not only provide a means of disposing waste tires but also help solve a difficult economical and technical problem. The benefits of using waste tires are particularly enhanced if they can be used to replace virgin construction materials made from non-renewable resources. There are a number of ways in which shredded tires can be used in highway construction as an aggregate replacement, for instance in the construction of: non-structural sound barrier fills, lightweight embankment fills crossing soft ground, regular fills, and edge drains. The conclusions of this report support the use of tire chips as an environmentally acceptable lightweight fill in highway applications if properly confined. Tire chips also offer great potential as a drainage material in highway construction. Recommendations for design procedures and construction specifications for the use of tire chips in highway fills are provided.
