REGIONAL ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND TRANSPORTATION : TRANSPORTATION AS A COMPETITIVE FACTOR IN ATLANTIC CANADA

The objectives of this study include an assessment of competitive freight rates, freight subsidies, and the level of transportation infrastructure on regional economic development in Atlantic Canada. More specifically, whether government expenditures on freight subsidies and infrastructure affect the competitiveness of local industry. The study reviewed classical economic concepts on transportation in the location of economic activity and examined contemporary thought on to the competitiveness of regional industry. The historical and contemporary economic and transportation environments were examined to consider transportation policy in these contexts. Two recent works on the role of transportation factors in regional economic development in the Atlantic Provinces were examined and a new direction for research on transportation and competitiveness was determined.
