CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE CONTRACT PLACING-AUTHORITY TO THE ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY OF MICROTUNNELLING TECHNOLOGY
The advantages of microtunnelling, particularly in urban areas, are discussed. It is suggested that more use could be made of the technique and applications are listed. These include the construction of conduits, the renovation of systems by pipe- eating or relining and the construction of connections and extensions. The importance of a preliminary survey of ground conditions and careful planning is emphasised. The 'Berlin' construction method is described and its advantages listed. The extensive use of the system by the Berlin Water Works and consequent savings made are outlined. Cost comparisons for 1991 between open and closed construction methods are presented diagramatically.
