RESEARCH INTO THE CONDITION AND PERFORMANCE OF BRIDGE DECK EXPANSION JOINTS
The TRL is carrying out research into the properties and service performance of bridge deck expansion joints. The aim is to develop a performance specification and approval tests for expansion joints on highway bridges, and to offer design guidance. A survey has been undertaken as part of this research of a sample of 250 joints to assess their condition and monitor deterioration over a two year period. In the time since a similar survey was undertaken (see IRRD 275966) asphaltic plug joints (APJ) have come into widespread use. The survey therefore included 125 of this type of joint, as well as reinforced elastomeric and elastomeric in metal runner (EMR) joints. The survey data were supplemented by a questionnaire sent to agent authorities, and by an investigation of the cost of traffic delays during maintenance works using QUADRO 2 models. The bridge inspection revealed that a substantial proportion of joints had some form of defect present. Most joints were found to be leaking and drainage systems were frequently blocked, confirming the potential for corrosion damage. Examples of common faults and poor detailing are illustrated in this report. The results of the study are used to compile a series of recommendations for the selection, detailing and maintenance of expansion joints. The quality of workmanship during installation is highlighted as essential to ensure satisfactory performance. Case studies from O three major structures are included.
