AN EFFICIENT PC BASED VIDEO VEHICLE DETECTOR
A system has been developed to assist traffic engineers with collecting road data by analysing video information in real time. The video images may be from a camera or from a video recording. The system has been implemented through the use of a video digitising board, and a stand- alone personal computer running dedicated software in conjunction with a graphical interface. The passage of a vehicle over an area of interest is detected by processing the digital levels of intensity. The system allows for significant flexibility in the positioning of non-intrusive detection areas. The data produced are sent to a parallel port as well as being stored as ASCII data files. These files can then be retrieved by application programs to produce valuable analysis statistics. Test results show that the system is both practical and reliable.
