BEHAVIOUR OF AXIALLY LOADED SIMPLY SUPPORTED LONG RECTANGULAR PLATES HAVING INITIAL DEFORMATIONS

The report deals with the behavior of long rectangular plates, axially loaded along their shorter edges and having initial deformations. Simply supported plates have been analysed and use has been made of general equations for large deflections of plates having initial deformations formulated by Marguerre. Based upon the Ritz energy method, approximate solution of these equations has been obtained. It has been disclosed that the effect of initial deformations on the behaviour of the plates can be both positive and negative depending on the shape of the initial deformations. Most affected are plates with low slenderness ratio, b/t, being in general use in ship structures.
